Summary: Based on the life of the notorious Australian criminal turned novelist and celebrity, Mark 'Chopper' Read, this is a dark tale. There are no dull moments in this film and to say that the character of Chopper has a propensity for violence would be an understatement.
A lot of countries have a 'Chopper' equivalent - a reformed criminal and celebrity through the arts (e.g. Jimmy Boyle in Scotland - watch the DVD "A Sense of Freedom" if this is your thing) and many of the public seem to enjoy reading and watching films about people who do (or did) the things that others only think of.
Although you will spend 90 minutes in the company of a central character who is highly unpredictable and complex (with a behavioural pattern of dispensing extreme violence with extreme flippancy), in typical Australian fashion this film also has its comical moments, mainly in the form of Chopper's wit.
This movie also demonstrates Eric Bana's depth of acting ability (it's hard to imagine that is the same guy who was the smooth hero in Troy).
There is an old saying that truth is often stranger than fiction - well, when it comes to Chopper you'd think they couldn't make it up.
